Listening Comprehension

In The Talented Clementine, Clementine, who is unable to come up with a talent for the talent show, discovers that her attention to detail (sometimes a liability) has become an asset when she is called upon by the principal to help “direct” the talent show in the absence of her teacher.  Clementine’s quick thinking keeps the show going on, despite some major difficulties, and earns her compliments as well as a real sense of pride in herself!

Phonological Awareness

The Leap Frog Code Word Caper video was a huge success and several of my students are applying the rules about silent “e” and “when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking”.  Way to go, class!!  During the next two weeks we will be working on the /ch/ and /sh/ sounds as well as new words that end in “_ft” and “_sk”.

Reading

In reading we are concentrating on possessive forms (created with “apostrophe s”), plurals (created with “s”), details, and alphabetical order by first letter.  We will also be using our November words for alphabetizing and playing bingo.  We only have three more units in our reader before we will take the second half of the Mastery Test and go into our next book!  Next week we will be doing a Thanksgiving crossword puzzle, reading a minibook on Thanksgiving and creating words out of the letters in “Happy Thanksgiving”!

Spelling

We began a new unit in spelling with a word preview on Monday.  The purpose of the Word Preview is to focus on the spelling skill of looking at each letter of a word (in contrast to reading skills which often involve seeing words as a whole).  We will continue the week with “Stretch It” (embellishing a basic sentence with details), “Fix It” (proofreading), the two sounds of letter “s” (/s/ as in “this” and /z/ as in “his”), and the configuration or shape of words.

Handwriting/Writing Skills

We are continuing our “Proof-It” activities and our work with nouns (words that name people, places or things) and adjectives (words that describe).  Some of my students have almost completed their review of lowercase cursive letters and are ready to work on writing capital cursive letters!

Reminders/Homework

This week I will be out of town on Thursday and Friday.  I have prepared extensively for my sub and anticipate that things will go well.  Although I do not plan on telling my class in advance, I did want you to know.  Since we have only two days of class next week, I have included the skills we will be covering next week in this update.  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and know that I am truly thankful for the opportunity to work with each of your children.  They are a blessing to me and to Summit, as I know they are to you!  You can look for my next update on December 1st.  The last day homework will be assigned this month is Wednesday, Nov. 19th, but please have your child continue to READ from any books you may have at home and record his/her reading time on the Book-It chart!  I will collect the charts on Monday, December 1st.
